What is Tibetan Astrology?

Published June 5, 2026

Tibetan astrology is a sophisticated system that blends the Kalachakra astronomical tradition from India with Chinese element-animal divination and native Tibetan practices. It serves both practical decision-making (when to marry, travel, build) and deeper spiritual understanding.

Two Main Systems

Dkar rtsis (White Astrology): Based on the Kalachakra Tantra, this system calculates precise planetary positions and lunar mansion locations. It requires complex astronomical mathematics and is used for calendar making and eclipse prediction.

Nag rtsis (Black Astrology): Based on Chinese element theory, this uses the five elements, 12 animals, 8 trigrams (parkha), and 9 palaces (mewa) for practical divination. It is more accessible and widely used for daily decision-making.

Five Elements

The five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Iron, Water — interact through nourishing and controlling cycles. Your birth year determines your element, which influences your personality, health, and fortune. Calculate your element →

Common Uses

Choosing wedding dates, analyzing personal fortune, matching relationship compatibility, selecting auspicious travel directions, and determining when to start businesses or build homes.
